Mother Courage and Her Children Written By Bertholt Brecht Plot And Sub-Plot The Plot of Mother Courage revolves around the life of the main character, Mother Courage, and her three Children, Eilif, Swiss Cheese and Katrrin, around the events of the Thirty Years War. In the first scene, Mother Courage pretends to tell the future, to rid herself of some officers. She marks one piece of paper with a cross, and one with none. A sergeant draws out the one with a cross, representing death. To prove that her predictions are true, she tells her children to draw as well. All three of them draw out a cross. At the end of this scene, the Sergeant takes Eilif whilst Mother Courage is distracted. Mother Courage follows the Swedish Army into Poland. In the tent of the Swedish Commander she haggles with the cook over the price of a capon, a type of bird. Mother...
