In 'Hard Times' Charles Dickens creates an image of an over-industrialised city, which is very polluted, boring and disliked by many, especially himself. This city is called Coketown, a fictional town, which is set in mid-nineteenth century England. The city is set across in an image of a black, dull, death-ridden place, in which many people live in complete chaos. In this essay I will explore the image created by Dickens of Coketown, and how this is achieved through the use of his language, imagery and punctuation.
