Human Geography Fieldtrip: North Co. Dublin. The impact of the city on its hinterland. During the last century Dublin city has seen a significant growth in its population from under 500,000 to over a million. The main reason for this is due to the growth and spread of the city. In the last five decades population growth has been immense in all parts of the county and has also spread beyond Dublin's boundary. During the past 40 years, the population living in the northern part of the county, north of a line from Baldoyle towards Ashbourne, Co. Meath, has quadrupled from around 30,000 to 120,000. North Dublin has changed quite drastically over the past few decades as a result from the better infrastructure in the county, the need for new roads and housing developments and especially due to the boom in population.
