Kasim, Mona 602925336 ScanLit 50W, Seth February 9, 2004 Dr. Stockman: A Man of Courage and Devotion The play "An Enemy of the People" by Ibsen focuses on two different ideals of justice, scientific and political, that is conflicted by two brothers on whether or not to repair the town's polluted bathes. Mayor Peter Stockmann, a respected politician, is concerned with his fellow citizens short-term personal revenue and the reputation of the town. Closing the polluted bathes would cost a lot of money, which would chase the tourist away from visiting and put the whole town at a loss. Peter Stockmann's brother, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a well-respected doctor, believes that no matter what the cost is one should look at the health of the townspeople first and the overall long term economic gain.
