Describe and Explain the Rise and Fall of the UK Coal and Mining Industry Mining is the extraction of a raw material from within the Earth's crust. Coal mining involves the removal of one of the following minerals; Anthracite, Bituminous coal, Sub-bituminous coal or Lignite. Coal is deposited by the decomposition of plants that forms peat and the changing of peat into solid coal by geological forces like heat and pressure. Coal that is close to the surface can be mined in open cast mines, these allow coal to be extracted without digging deep mine shafts. In open cast mines, all of the machinery needed can be operated above ground. Coal that is found in deep deposits underground has to be mined using deep mine shafts that are used to bring the coal up, out of the ground.
