Comparison: Belfast Confetti and Slough In Slough Betejemen invites violence. He wants s the town to be destroyed with a bomb. In Belfast Confetti, Carson describes the violence-taking place. It is as if the bomb has already taken off. Slough is about a suburban town and Belfast Confetti is about a city. The reader quickly appreciate that Betjemen despises 'Slough'. Carson is deeply affected by the explosion in Belfast- he loses his sense of direction and his sense of identity because of what happens. John Betejemen was known to be a very 'English' poet and sought to protect the country from unwelcome change, especially architecturally. Carson has written many poems about the troubles Belfast faces. His poems on this topic often have a tone of strong disbelieve, anger and regret. The reader knows that Betjemen hates Slough because he is talking about destroying the town with bombs-all the people wants to change...
