Communication has been an important cause of change in Doncaster. However it has not been the only one. The coaching trade caused a major change in communication in the Georgian period. The 1828 map of Doncaster shows that, compared with the medieval map of Doncaster, new areas were being built and progressing into the south of Doncaster as landed gentry were using the open land available to build their new Georgian houses such as Elmfield house, each with Georgian features such as sash windows, iron work balcony, parapets and several chimneys (many chimneys represented wealth.) all these new houses were representing wealth and beauty within Doncaster. As the Great North Road ran through Doncaster so did the coaching trade.
