CHANGING SUBURBAN LANDSCAPES Throughout the world, suburban landscapes have witnessed vast changes. These once rural areas on the fringe of the city have since become engulfed by people, resulting in the further outward expansion of the city's limits, a process referred to as suburbanisation. There is no homogeneity to this development, with each city expanding in varying ways. This essay will therefore investigate suburbanisation in two areas; firstly Birmingham in England, and secondly the general trends of the American cities, in order to discover how and why suburban landscapes have changed, and in order to determine whether there are any common themes present For several hundred years, the wealthy aristocratic and middle classes have lived in their manor houses and country homes on the rural fringe of a city.
