After the dark ages has come the Renaissance, and the more Hull proclaims, the better for itself". The most common image of Hull, an isolated city on the eastern seaboard of the United Kingdom (Appendix, figure 1), is of a bleak, dark and windy city that is struggling to survive; and to a certain extent this image is true. However, the availability of grants from the central government has potentially offered new hope to this declining city, with the Council investing in many projects aimed at turning its fortunes around. Two of the largest, and most publicly accessible, projects to have been implemented are the Marina development and Princes Quay shopping centre; both supposed manifestations of the city's new image and revitalised pride.
