When was the existing stone built at Dover constructed? Can we put an approximate date on this? What problems are encountered in doing this? Dover Castle was first erected in November 1066 when Duke William of Normandy came to Dover with his army. They spent 8 days at Dover improving the site before leaving. We don't know exactly what changes were made, and can only guess from looking at the remains found at excavations, as nothing of the original building remains at Dover. Nothing else is known to have happened at the site until after Henry II was made King in 1154. Between the 1160's and 1188 many changes were made to Dover, costing, in total, well over £6000 and creating most of the modern castle we know today.
