What were the defensive features of Rochester castle before 1215? Square keep castles had their weaknesses. There was not much the defenders could do to fight back; unless the doorway was attacked. Usually attackers tried to starve the defenders out or undermine the wall so part of it would collapse. The square corners were weak against this type of attack. As an attacker would have approached the castle he would have noticed that the castle had lots of natural defensive features. These included High ground, which was a good defensive feature because it was much harder to fight when going up a hill. It was much easier to fight looking down on someone. The castle was also near a river, which provided water in times of siege and was a good natural barrier against the enemy when they tried to attack.
