Searle GSI Ben Callard Paper #3: Searle and the Twin Earth objection (Topic # 2) In response to Putnam's Twin Earth objection against internalism, Searle's first move was to point out several puzzling and ultimately crippling factors in the "intuitions" which Putnam unjustly takes for granted in his thought experiment. One such crippling factor is the concern that Twin Earth just simply cannot be an exact duplicate of Earth minus the H2O component. For this particular substance, namely water, is such an essential feature of Earth that to change its structure would mean changing Earth's essential structure. If its validity and significance are accepted, then this concern would point out that Putnam's thought experiment is intrinsically defective, and hence, inadequate in its attempt to show that meanings do not determine extension.
