Evaluating Brasilia as a New Town * Introduction Brasilia is located roughly in the centre of Brazil. It is just north-east of Goiania and is also around 1000km north of São Paulo. Brasilia also lies on the flat watershed between the Amazon and the Rio Parana. Brasilia was constructed between 1956 and 1960, during the government of President Juscelino Kubitschek. It was established as the capital of Brazil on the 21st of April, 1960. Brasilia was planned to be the capital of Brazil in order to reduce pressure on Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, as well as to provide a focus on the centre of Brazil. This plan was conceived by Lucio Costas and the major buildings in Brasilia were designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
