Essay One: During the Medieval Period why was it important for nobles to build castles? In medieval Europe the first castles ("castle" coming from the latin word castellum meaning a fortified structure) appeared in the 9th century. This was because the empire in modern France, Germany and North Italy was collapsing and authority was disintigrateing as a result of the Vikings raiding the countries and raping and pillaging the people. This especially took place in Northern France, this where the name for the area of northern France called Normandy comes from, the Vikings who were Norse-men or Normans settled there. There were also various invasions by Magyars around Europe. In England however there were very few fortified structures because there was no great need for them since the Earls of Wessex, led by the king, who established fortified towns or burhs to protect his people, had managed to drive the Vikings...
