A work of architecture should be firmly built, integrated with its function and setting, and pleasing to the eyes. It is both a scientific and an artistic discipline. It has often been called "the mother of the arts/ because it comprises of painting, sculpture and decoration. Initially, buildings served as protection against the weather and against man's enemies. Additionally, individuals sought to express their many religious, social, political, and aesthetic appreciations in the architectural wonders they created. Many a time, however, the enormous beauty of an architectural magnificence was to express devotion to a greatly revered and loved one.
