Introduction: Alvar Aalto was one of the twentieth century's greatest architects, whose legacy is of huge importance to us today. As a modernist/functionalist he believed completely in the use of new materials, which in turn inspired and allowed new forms to develop. Alongside this view, more importantly, he felt that the experience of architecture was an eternal one, where the greatest achievements could be picked out through the centuries likes pearls on a string, and that the studying of the past was one of the most important undertakings an architect could take. Unlike many other modernist architects, historicism was at the center of his architecture, but in a way that moved light years ahead of mere pastiche.
