This is a passage from Franz Kafka's short story The Metamorphosis. This passage is from the beginning of the story after the main character Gregor Samasa has been transformed into a sort of insect. Due to his condition, Gregor has not yet let his room for work, and is being called upon by his father, mother, sister, and Mr. Manager, his boss. This passage is significant because it gives insight into Gregor, his mother, father, and sister. Furthermore, in this excerpt Kafka introduces several important themes. In this single passage, Kafka demonstrates how he portrays each Samsa family member, as well as their relations with Gregor. Gregor, being the main character, is the most complicated.
