La belle Dame Sans Merci- Commentary This ballad was written by John Keats in 1820 in his late career, a year before he died. Keats was fascinated by the world of imagination and the immortal world. Keats took the title of the Ballad from a medieval poet, Alain Cartier, in a literal translation the title means "the beautiful woman without mercy". An overview of the poem is; an anonymous narrator addresses the knight and asks what is wrong, as a response the knight answers that he has been in love with a beautiful fairy's child, who has now abandoned him. Ultimately this helps the reader understand why the knight is in a state of anguish. A similar replicate of the Ballad is a Celtic story, which is an Arthurian legend.
