Grandma Chance is an important character in the novel. What do we learn about her in Chapter 1? Throughout the entire Chapter one, the reader learns an exceeding amount about Grandma Chance who is also a very important character within the novel. She is a very complex character and this is shown throughout. The first time the reader gets a glimpse of Grandma Chance is the first page of the novel. Dora talks about how grateful her and her twin sister Nora were that she left them the boarding house. 'What would have become of us, if Grandma hadn't left us this house?' This gives the reader the hint that there will be more about this woman later on in the story and that she is one of the key characters within it. The next time the reader encounters Grandma Chance, is the actual birth of Dora and Nora....
