Modern Indian English poetry has its roots in the post-independence period. At this time the poets began to reject the themes of romanticism, escapism and love for nature that were brought out in the poems of the previous generations. In the modern age, the themes changed completely - some of them were riots, poverty, disillusionment, urbanization, loneliness and alienation. The focus shifted from idealism and escapism to real and practical aspects of Modern Indian life. Two of the most well known Modern Indian English poets are Dilip Chitre and Jayanta Mahapatra.
