Why did destalinisation cause serious crisis within the Soviet Bloc? And what was significance of Khrushchev's speech at the 20th party conference? * During a period of collective leadership, Khrushchev gradually rose to power. At a speech "On the Personality Cult and its Consequences'' to the closed session of the Twentieth Party Congress of the CPSU, February 25, 1956, Khrushchev shocked his listeners by denouncing Stalin's dictatorial rule and cult of personality. He also attacked the crimes committed by Stalin's closest associates * The impact on Soviet politics was immense. This de-stalinization gave a huge impact on the people. The speech stripped the legitimacy of his remaining Stalinist rivals, dramatically boosting his power domestically. Afterwards, Khrushchev eased restrictions, freeing millions of political prisoners * Khrushchev's reform agenda relied on an all-encompassing goal towards "de-Stalinization", geared towards exposing then reversing Stalin's most heinous abuses of power.
