The Circulatory System Importance of the Circulatory System - Serves as the one system through which all of the others are connected. - Circulates blood, delivering oxygen, nutrients, and carrying away carbon dioxide and other cell wastes. - Is strongly dependent on the respiratory system and the digestive system and vice versa. - Every cell in the body depends on this system, and it functioning properly. - Plays an important role in the immune system of the body by producing and carrying the White Blood Cells. Cells - Red blood cells (erythrocytes): carry O2 to the body, collect CO2 and transport it back to lungs. Are made in the red bone marrow, do not have a nucleus, and are packed with millions of haemoglobin molecules. - White blood cells (leucocytes): germinators to fight infections. Two types: macrophages (phagocytic, pass through walls of capillaries to engulf and digest pathogens) and lymphocytes (non-phagocytic, enables body to recognise specific pathogens
