... Randy Salarax IB Biology HL Compost Lab Due: June 9, 2008 Question: Is it possible to create compost in a controlled and contained environment? Will these passive factors effect the rate of production and thus have results that will differ if created in an active environment? Hypothesis: In my opinion, I believe that compost can be produced in a passive environment. In a passive environment, the amount of time taken to create compost would change, being a lot longer. This is due to the lack of oxygen the biodegradable materials require while processing compost. Also, a passive environment can result in a horrid smell afterwards due to the shortage of aeration in the containers of pre-composting materials. Experimental Materials: * Container (c) --> 36 grams * Lid (l) --> 25.6 grams * Browns: composed of dried leaves, ash and straw * Greens: composed of grass clippings, fresh fruit peels, egg shells and rice grains *
