Do you consider that Wallace's reputation adequately reflects his scientific achievements? Alfred Russel Wallace was a Victorian scientist who was widely regarded as Darwin's opposite. This man devised the theory of natural selection along with Darwin. Wallace is widely unknown for this due to the fact that Darwin after receiving a letter from Wallace outlining his theories decided to publish his work, so he became known for the evolution theory. Wallace was not bitter about this but glad that he had helped push his friend into publishing. Wallace collected most of his evidence for his theories on expedition's collecting for museums and that is how he made his living. It was very hard to be a scientist when Wallace was born, you needed to come from money to be able to publish, go on expeditions to collect material for research Wallace was very outspoken on many issues, including spiritualism, socialism, phrenology...
