Is an egalitarian society possible? An egalitarian can be defined as a society where everyone is equal and stratification describes the different "layers" that exist in society. Whilst some argue that it is possible for a society to run without such a structure, some sort of class division separates most known communities. Furthermore, I intend to look at whether an egalitarian society is possible. To begin with I will look at The Kibbutz System (Hebrew word for communal settlement), which is a unique rural community; a society dedicated to mutual aid and social justice; a socio-economic system based on the principle of joint ownership of property, equality and cooperation of production, consumption and education. The kibbutz system functions as a direct democracy. The general assembly of all its members formulates policy, elects officers, authorizes the kibbutz budget and approves new members.
