'The values of equality and diversity are irreconcilable in contemporary Britain'. Discuss. Equality in human beings is discussed in article one of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, saying 'All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood'. (Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948-1998) Achieving this equality has been the aim of various laws and legislation for decades; Equal Pay Act (1970); Sex Discrimination Act (1976); Race Relations Act (1976); Employment Protection Act (1978) and the Disability Discrimination Act (1995). One distinct characteristic of all these acts are that they are working towards an 'equal' society, where people are treated as individuals, not discriminated against for their 'differences'.
