` To what extent can Britain be described as a Post-industrial society? ` Industrial society is where the society organises production and where work is divided into specialised tasks and co-ordinated by managers. The industrial society is characterised by large scale manufacture centred upon factories employing large numbers of workers, who due to restricted access to transport, live and play in close proximity. Products and services are also provided for leisure time- the production itself was transformed through introduction of power driven machinery. Post Industrial society is described outside the factory, it is variously described as a mode of production based on information, services, knowledge computers and more recently biotechnology- it is characterised by much smaller units of production. According to Danial Bell such a change was characterised in this way because jobs were changing from physical strength to mental agility, which he believed would further lead to a knowledge based...
