Why did Chartism emerge in the late 1830's? The reasons why Chartism emerged are many, and there has been much debate over which of the possible reasons may hold the most significance. Political, Economic, and Social reasons panned back years and there were reasons in the short term too. One of which was the opposition to the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, which I believe was the greatest reason as to why Chartism emerged in the late 1830's. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Britain was ruled by aristocrats and large landowners. Those who could vote had a privaledge, as voting rights were very restricted. For example, most constituencies had fewer than 200 voters. Many of the towns that were creating so much of Britains new wealth (Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Leeds) could not elect their own MP's.
