What use is made of the role of women in the societies depicted in Ngugi's 'I will marry when I want' and Salih's 'Season of migration to the North'? 'Season of migration to the North' and 'I will marry when I want' were both written in the twentieth century by African Authors and are both set predominately in Africa. Ngugi Wa Thiongo, a Kikuyu who was born in Kenya to one of his father's peasant wives, wrote the play 'I will marry when I want' in 1977. Tayeb Salih, a Sudanese author, wrote the novel 'season of migration to the north' in 1969. Both the play and the novel contend with the controversial issues of African women's traditional roles and hence their treatment by both African and colonial men. Due to the controversial nature of Ngugi's works, 'I will marry when I want' was banned in 1977 and Ngugi was detained...
