What is the importance of men, and women's perception of men in 'Top Girls'? 'Top Girls', by Caryl Churchill begins on the set of a dinner party arranged by a woman named Marlene. We soon learn of Marlene that she has "what it takes" to stand up to men. She has the job of managing director at the "Top Girls" employment agency meaning that she has power above both men and women. Moreover, she is the first female to hold this post and thus feels that she has a connection with the Prime Minister "Maggie" Thatcher. The connection here is that whilst Marlene is the first female to become an executive at "Top Girls", Margaret Thatcher is the first woman to become the British Prime Minister. Marlene is a 'Thatcherite' who has been inspired by Thatcher's way of doing things and does not let the oppressing power of men...
