Twenty five years after the Sex Discrimination Act (1995) was introduced, assumptions are still made about the roles behaviour, abilities and needs of women and men. (EOC 2001). Popular media reflects these assumptions with stereotypes of characters behaviour, attributes, ambitions and social status. I will answer to what extend does stereotypes intrude in Disney animation movie? I base my answer on The Disney Princesses. Social psychologists define a stereotype as being a cognitive structure containing the perceiver's knowledge, beliefs, and expectancies about some human social group. Disney uses stereotypical character images that people recognize so it's easier to tell a story. E.g. large eyes & heads, muscular male bodies, and thin female bodies are all characteristics of the heroes and heroines, while villains are often ugly. The Disney stereotypes are: - * The curvaceous, slightly fretful, but essential innocuous heroine * The touchingly-strong contemporary heroine, determined to fulfil her own destiny; * The larger-than-life matron...
