There are a number of different approaches that aim to explain criminality and criminalisation however, the focus of this essay lies upon the sociological and psychological perspectives. Although both approaches suggest opposite explanations, they each contain valid points that account for the causes of criminality and criminalisation. However, each explanation contains an argument that may be inadequate on its own. The sociological approach centres its argument around society and the effect it has on the individual. On the other hand, the psychological approach concentrates on the individual as the foundation of criminality. The sociological perspective suggests that criminal tendencies are located in the structure of society. It argues that criminals are influenced through the culture of society, particularly via popular culture and mass media that continually encourage violence and delinquency.
