These binaries are always hierarchical; that means, one side of the binary is positive (which is strong, natural, good, hard, coherent) over the other side (which is weak, artificial, bad, soft, incoherent). On the other hand, Enlightenment couples the ideal of equality of individuals with reason. 'Equality' and 'individuality' were central to the consciousness required of people in an economic system based on an 'open' competitive market.
