Two Spirit Harvey The Western Culture views all humans as being either man or woman. But contrary to this widely accepted view, other societies such as Native American communities, also include alternative genders- referred to as being berdache, and even genders of their own referred to as being two-spirited. It is not like the "narrowly defined Western categories of 'gay,' 'lesbian,' 'bisexual,' and 'straight'" (Lang, p. 209). Two other genders, women-men and men-women, are included in the culture, traditions, and language. To be two spirited does not only emphasize gender, but also "sexuality, ethnicity, and a spirituality that is viewed as innate in Native American homosexual women and men" (Lang, p.212). From the film, Two Spirit People, there are so many different names for the same thing, which in our language would strictly be gay or straight. Two-spirit people are able to transcend the two different worlds of male and female...
