The history of Latin America is significant from the period of conquest through the wars of independence. The Spanish government faced the problem of harmonizing the demand of the conquistadors for cheap Indian labor. The dispute on Indian policy led to the dramatic outward form of a struggle of ideas. The main parties of this struggle were the crown, church and the colonists. Hispaniola was the first testing ground of Spain's new Indian policy. Christopher Columbus compelled natives to bring in a daily tribute of gold dust. Bartolome de Las Casas eventually joined the struggle against Indian slavery. New laws were created for the Indies and the Encomienda in 1542. The reparimiento would replace the forced labor under the encomienda after 1550.
