Top Girls is concerned to dramatize conflicts between women as much as their shared experiences. In an essay of 1500 words discuss this statement, with reference to both the play text and the video. The idea for Top Girls appeared to Caryl Churchill when she working at the Royal Court Theatre in London, a radical venue for new playwrights. It was written and performed in the early 1980's, which was the period during which a new breed of woman was emerging. This 'superwoman' was one who exceeded all expectations of previous roles of women, as she combined all activities of public and personal life and was infiltrating herself into the patriarchal world of work. Although Top Girls has been regularly celebrated as an outstanding feminist play, Churchill has carefully avoided labelling it as such, preferring to highlight the problems associated with the term 'feminism' and looking closely at relationships between...
