Mining started in Rhondda in the early 19th Century but didn't expand properly until the mid 1850's, when the first 'deep mine' was built. The Rhondda mining industry experienced its main 'boom time' between 1869 and 1889. The output of coal increased by 371% and 41,000 men were employed, producing "9.6 million tons of coal a year" (Source: The South Wale's Echo, 1986) at the industry's peak. South Wales's coal industry produced the majority of the coal used in "the boilers of the British Navy" during World War 1(Source: The South Wale's Echo).
