Through the experiences of the characters of Cloudstreet, written by Tim Winton, the novel communicates more than a family's story over a time period of twenty years. It promotes a value system through the characters in the way in which they act, communicate and portray their lives and beliefs. Gender, class, identity, strength of the family and home life and the simple things in life are the values included throughout the novel. The lambs and the pickles are not that of a high social class. They have fallen into society's definition of the working class and therefore take on a somewhat underprivileged life. In doing this, both families recreate the values and attitudes of this class across the generations. Not being well off, smart or expressive humans but instead are lively, practical and extremely kind and welcoming people.
