The position of Women In Shakespeare's time. Marriage Marriage was essential to a women's identity, however only a third of women actually got married. It still had importance though the percentage was inadequate. Women who where unmarried and had reached the age of thirty found it hard to find a man to marry, and at forty expected to remain unmarried. People got married at a late age, and young unmarried women would earn their own livings, often saving up for marriage. Very few unmarried women under the age of forty-five lived independently, they tended to live with their parents instead of someone else's home as a servant. Women only headed 10% of households, they were often widows than spinsters. The mean age a woman would get married was a least 26, only 15% of married women were under the age of 24 and in rural areas it was hard to find any...
