The contributions of Dukheim and Comte to Sociology Sociology, "the scientific study of human social relations or group life." Two of the main contributors to sociological theory are French philosopher, Auguste Comte (1798-1857) and fellow Frenchman, Emile Durkheim (1859-1917), social theorist. -What do you get when you cross a member of the Mafia with a sociologist? -An offer you can't understand? Sociology is often not taken too seriously by the natural scientists, as they often see it as lacking subject matter and jargon ridden. Auguste Comte disagreed with this stereotypical view cast by the natural scientists and was the acknowledged founder of the movement in sociology positivism or "the positive philosophy". Comte's ideas behind positivism were that sociology could be examined using scientific analysis and procedure.
