Some are submissive, passive conformists and others are strong-willed, spirited individualists. But I think that everyone at one point in her life longs for a freedom that she does not have. Once that desire is awakened, it can never be suppressed again. Kate Chopin's book The Awakening tells how one woman, Edna Pontellier, experiences her awakening and her life as a result. Similar to the idea conveyed with Voltaire's quotation, Edna became free when she wanted to be and nothing could hold her back. The desire for independence and individuality is often stifled by the boundaries of Creole society; but once awakened, this desire can cause one to go to extremes for self-discovery.
