The Family in Sociology The view that society is like a living organism is known as organic analogy. In this analogy consists the belief that different parts of society represent "organs" in a metaphorical body. These different "organs" are known as social institutions. The family happens to be one of these institutions. Others include: Religion Law Politics Entertainment Education Media Industry All parts of this metaphorical body are interdependent. Meaning, all parts of society are dependent on all the other parts. If one part of society collapses or is taken away then society will eventually cease to exist. In this essay I am going to be looking specifically at the family, its functions and how it benefits society and its members. The functions of the family are, first of all, reproduction.
