Character study of Miss Thompson Task: Write a Character study of Miss Thompson. Include analysis of her physical appearance, her personality, her relationships, her language, and how she is a catalyst for events in the story. Somerset Maugham uses many devices in his short stories especially the story 'Rain'. We have seen evidence of these devices in previous analysis essays. The device this time we are asked to analyse is Miss Thompson. She is very interesting in the way that she speaks, the way she influences some of the characters, but is also a catalyst for some of the events in the story. The first time we meet Miss Thompson in the text is just after the rain has started and the main characters (that have been introduced to us) have found a hotel.
