Herbst 1 Sociology is a field that is relatively new in comparison to other social sciences. However, that does not subtract from its value as a social science discipline. It is extremely important for studying the human world as a whole and establishing what kinds of relationships are formed between various groups of people and why. Sociology analyzes the process of rapid change within societies and the consequences these changes bring. It attempts to answer questions ranging from why different classes exist to why the divorce rate has risen substantially since the 1950's. According to John Macionis, sociology by definition is "the systematic study of human social relations, groups, and societies, which examines patterns, trends, and social change"(Macionis, 2003); but it is also much more than that.
