The falling marriage rate and the high divorce rate, the declining fertility rate and the rising number of working mothers, the cultural tolerance of homosexuality, atheism, singledom, abortion, childlessness, lone parenthood and what used to be called 'living in sin' all reflect a society in which, on the face of it, it no longer seems possible to take 'the family' for granted.
