Marie Curie Maria was born on November 7, 1867 in Poland. At that time, Poland has not been an independent country for most of a century. What also was going on at that time was Warsaw was in part of Poland controlled by czar who hoped to stamp out polish nationalism by keeping the people ignorant of their cultural and language. Polish patriots were furious so they were so determined to regain control of their nation. Marie's parents were educators and they did their best to overcome restrictions placed on them by their Russian supervisors. Marie was her fifth child in her family. Marie's mother died at the age of 42 from tuberculosis when Marie was 10 in 1878. Zosia was the oldest child who had died from Typhus; Hela became an educator; and Jozef and Bronya, physicians.
