A number of high profile establishment figures have recently called for the legalisation of the world's oldest profession. They argue that as prostitution is not going away, licensed brothels will: keep vulnerable women off the streets; help prevent the spread of aids; bring more revenue and cut out exploitation. Opponents argue that exchanging sex for money is morally wrong, and that the law should be proscriptive rather than pragmatic; that legalisation would encourage prostitution; that it encourages the treatment of women as commodities, and that it would lead to an ever more permissive society. Some women enjoy being prostitutes and providing a service, and they earn a good living from it. At the other end of the spectrum, there are underage women, and women trafficked from other countries who are forced into the industry.
