By: Ben Wickizer 1-27-01 Stine Period 5 THE KU KLUX KLAN The terrorist organization the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) began in the southern states during the winter of 1865-1866 as a prankish social group. The exact city the KKK started in was Pulaski, Tennessee. A former Confederate general, Nathan Forrest, founded the group and served as their first "Imperial Wizard." Albert Pike served as the Chief Justice of the KKK while he also was the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction. The KKK regarded the Reconstruction governments as hostile and oppressive. They also generally believed in the inferiority of blacks and therefore mistreated the rise of former slaves in social status. The Klan eventually became and illegal organization committed to destroying the Reconstruction governments from the Carolinas to Arkansas. The Klansmen would injure or even murder blacks, Jews, and people of other religions. In 1867, a secret KKK convention was held...
