Sociology Essay Is the Family Universal? Discuss There are many different types of families. The sociologist, Graham Murdock examined the family in a range of settings in 250 societies. His definition of a family is: " the family is a social group characterised by common residents, economic co-operation and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes; at least two of whom maintain a sexual relationship, and one or more children (own or adopted) of the sexually cohabiting adults." A definition of universal is: "of relating to, extending to, or affecting the entire world or all within the world." These definitions will be combined to try to prove whether Murdock's definition of a family is true-to-life or not. Families come in many different forms in society today.
