How does the single woman threaten conventional gender arrangements in nineteenth century England and Australia? Discuss the figures of the prostitute and the governess in your answer. In the nineteenth century women were regarded as the property of men, traditionally being passed over from the father to the husband. The prostitute and governess were two roles, which emerged in this time, that required the woman to be single, therefore threatening conventional gender arrangements. Such roles were more common for lower class women and posed a particular threat to the morals of the higher-class society. The following essay will discuss how these roles played an integral part in changing the way women were viewed in the nineteenth century, with particular focus on England and Australia.
